During the first Urban Incubator: Belgrade programme year, five hubs formed the most important physical space network occupied by international and local programmes – then derelict, unused, and in various states of dilapidation, disrepair, and neglect. Ever since then, through financial investment as well as the individual projects´ commitment and initiatives, work and enthusiasm, especially the “Spanish House” and Kraljevica Marka 8 have been continuously used and developed as community and cultural centres. They are places for artistic production and presentation, for debate, seminars and meetings, office work, cooking, and partying. All sub-projects have been set up in such a way that they developed beyond their limited lifespan within the framework of Urban Incubator. Curator of the UIB 2013 Tim Rieniets explained his concept: the Incubator is neither a festival nor an artist-in-residence program; it has its own, unique structure. The selected projects are housed in unused spaces and buildings in Savamala, and are active for at least a year. They deal intensively with a wide range of aspects involving the quarter, its evolution and its residents, are open and accessible to all, and promote exchange and cooperation among international and local players.
